Chapter 8. The Way Up
Code of Honour
- People read the CV. They read the signature under it more carefully.
- You enter a serious house through a third man.
- Whoever vouched for you answers for you. Don’t leave him in your debt.
- Pick the place first, the pay second.
- You see more from the door than from the table. Stand by the door a while.
- They’ll ask your opinion once they know what it’s worth.
- A man who never obeyed gives orders blind.
- Respect, yes. Yes-men, no.
- Say the order back in your own words. Sheep go missing in Misilmeri in more ways than one.
- To the new boss, respect. To the old one, thanks.
- A mentor in your way is still your mentor. Go round him; don’t go to war.
- Sometimes one bag you didn’t take off the carousel earns you all the respect you need.
- Changes are announced once they’ve already happened.
- Don’t hang your fate on one man upstairs.
- Decisions get made in the car, not in the meeting room.
- Forget the org chart. Know who’s related to whom and who owes whom.
- The man who asks too many questions is the first to be suspected.
- While you’re counting other men’s yachts, someone is counting your men.
- See the danger, act today. Armour due next week won’t save you.
- A beaten man who’s ready to work—take him on. The rest—keep them in sight.
- No ally is more dangerous than the one you told your routine to with your own mouth.
- Choose your model, or your model will choose you.
- Respect the quality, not the side.
- The boys are watching you too.
- Everything secret gets read one day. Write and speak as if it’s being read already.
