Chapter 7. Be Your Own Don
Code of Honour
- Convictions go on the scoreboard. Arrests don’t.
- Start the day with what counts, not with what shouts.
- A head can do one thing at a time. Don’t pretend it can do two.
- Every task has four fates: do it, cross it off, hand it over, put it off.
- Wrap a no as a gift and nobody counts it as a no.
- Busy isn’t working. Riina was very busy.
- Habit saves your strength and gives away your schedule.
- Don’t sit at the same table every evening while the town is full of people you stand in the way of.
- A goal runs out. Who you are goes to work every day.
- What you look at in the morning is what you shoot at by evening.
- To decide is to cut.
- First the point, then the facts, then the options, then the choice.
- Keep asking why until you reach the driver who doesn’t know the route.
- A task with no next step has no legs.
- Whatever you write down, someone else will read one day.
- The harder you believe, the harder you look for proof against.
- “I knew it” is a comfort, not a lesson.
- Play out the worst case, take your precautions, then switch it off.
- Work grows to fill the deadline. No deadline, and it grows for ever.
- Rest is part of the job, not truancy from it.
- Boredom is as dangerous as fatigue. Just quieter.
- Home is a safe harbour, not an office.
- Look for what was up to you. The culprits will be found without your help.
- Experience that teaches you nothing is just time served.
- Respect your partner, but don’t marry the deal.
